Applying for a Credit Card? 4 Tips You Need to Know Ahead of Time
Are you ready to apply for a credit card for the first time? You may have an interest in doing so because you need to build your credit history. Before you start filling out applications for credit cards, you should know a few things ahead of time that can truly benefit you.
Do Not Complete Too Many Applications
You know that you want to get approved for a credit card, but you should not fill out too many applications at once because it can cause your credit score to drop. Fill out an application for the credit card that you are interested in having the most. If you get denied, apply for one or two more. When you complete the application, you provide your social security number, and it leaves a hard inquiry on your report. You do not want to have too many of those hard inquiries on the credit report.
Look for a Low-Interest Credit Card
Before applying for any credit card, check the interest rates. How much will you be charged in interest? It is always ideal to apply for a card that offers low-interest rates because you would not have to pay too much interest on the purchases you are making. Try to look for a card with an interest rate of 16% or lower. Depending on where you apply for the credit card, you could get an interest rate that is as low as 10%.
Pay Off a Large Portion of Your Balance Each Month
When you regularly carry a balance on your credit cards, you will have more interest to pay. If you want to avoid paying too much in interest, try to pay off most or all of your balance each month. It is easier to pay the balance off each month when you are only using the credit card for smaller purchases.
Use the Card on Smaller Purchases
Continue paying for costly items with your debit card or cash when possible. Use your credit card for items that are easier for you to pay off by the following month. For example, you might want to use your credit card to pay for the gas in your vehicle, breakfast in the morning, or even a few groceries.
Good credit is something most adults want to have because of the advantages associated with it. If you are applying for a credit card because you want to obtain a good credit score, follow the tips mentioned above or talk to credit card services about improving your credit score.
