Preparing Your Items For A Pawn Shop Sale

When it's time to pawn an item, you might be tempted to simply take your item to the pawn shop and be done with the process. While this might be simple, it won't lead to you receiving as much money as you would if you go to the pawn shop prepared.

Clean It

One of the most important things to do with your items is give them a thorough cleaning. Pawn shops will clean your items before selling them, but if they are already in good condition, they may be more likely to give you a better offer. If your item is damaged and there is a way to repair it, make sure to do so. Make sure there is absolutely no discoloration or markings.

Prepare Electronic Devices

With certain items, more preparation is needed. For example, if you will be pawning a laptop or mobile device, make sure that all the data you need is already off the device. There is no guarantee that the pawn shop will wipe your personal data. Make sure there are no scratches, cracks, or broken hinges. Pawn shop workers are trained to identify common problems with electronic devices, so do not try to sell a broken item to a pawn shop. Also, find out if the pawn shop will accept the operating system that the device is using.

Include Anything Necessary to Test the Device

If the item requires batteries, make sure to bring batteries so you can show how the item works. When it requires a power cord, often the pawn shop will have power plugs ready to test it. If the device is password protected, make sure to write down the password so they can easily access the device.

Bring a Certificate of Authenticity

When you are pawning jewelry, you may have a certificate of authenticity. This is a great item to bring with your jewelry because you can prove that your jewelry is real.

Even when you prepare your items, you will usually not get the full value. Pawn shops offer money based on the condition of the item and how likely it is to sell. If you are selling a video game console, you are more likely to receive close to the value of the item than if you are selling something more obscure. However, a pawn shop is often a better option than selling the item yourself, as the transaction happens on the same day.
